Origin recently completed this installation to the east of Kilmarnock on the east coast of Scotland. The installation was for a frameless glass balcony on a residential development. The customer wanted a frameless look but also wanted the security of having a handrail.
We subsequently agreed with the customer to have spigots with a slotted handrail. The spigots used were to accommodate 17.5mm toughened laminate glass, as was the top rail. We provided a top rail that was specifically designed to accommodate the 17.5mm glass through the supply of a rubber gasket. We gave the customer clear advice as to how to install both the spigots and the gasket. The spigots had 4 x M12 fixings through the base of the spigot into the concrete base. We recommended (and supplied) fisher expansion bolts. While they were relatively expensive, they provided excellent fixing. We also supplied a cover plate that fitted comfortably over the top of the spigot once it was installed.
The customer experienced a few difficulties while trying to fit the gasket into the glass. There was a simple solution. By simply adding some washing-up liquid to the top of the glass we were able to easily slide the gasket onto the top of the panels. The slotted tube was then fitted on top of the gasket. We supplied all of the components that the customer needed to fit the tube together. These included a 90-degree connector and wall flanges. While the handrail was supplied in 6m lengths, it was very easy for the customer to install it on-site. The handrail was only 2mm in wall thickness.
The spigots were fully tested to the required line load test of 0.74kN when fixed to concrete. Once the installation was completed, we provided the customer with a test certificate to evidence this. The customer was delighted with the end result of the spigots installed in Kilmarnock, Scotland.
